CPTPP work permits for UK citizens: working in Canada without an LMIA
What changed, and what it lets a British citizen do
The United Kingdom has joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and on 2 September 2026 Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada added a United Kingdom entry to the guidance its officers use for CPTPP professionals. A British citizen with a pre-arranged job offer from a Canadian employer, in one of 61 listed occupations, can now be issued a Canadian work permit without the employer first obtaining a Labour Market Impact Assessment.
The LMIA is normally the slow, expensive part of hiring a foreign worker in Canada, so removing it is the substance of this route. Two limits matter as much as the opening: the United Kingdom is listed for professionals only, with no technicians stream, and a UK principal applicant's spouse does not qualify for the open work permit that spouses of Australian, Chilean, Japanese and Mexican applicants receive.
Checked against IRCC guidance on canada.ca on 3 September 2026. That page was last modified 2 September 2026.
This is not a UK ETA matter, and it is not something we file. We publish this because the rule is new and badly covered elsewhere. Applying for a Canadian work permit is a separate process with a separate government, and we take no part in it. Everything below is drawn from IRCC's published guidance, which is linked at the foot of the page.
What a British applicant has to show
- British citizenship. The route follows citizenship, not residence — living in the UK is not enough, and unlike Australia the UK entry does not extend to permanent residents.
- A pre-arranged job with a Canadian employer in one of the listed occupations. The offer comes first; this is not a permit you can obtain and then look for work with.
- An occupation at TEER 0 or TEER 1 that requires the theoretical and practical application of a body of specialised knowledge.
- A post-secondary degree of four or more years, plus whatever else the occupation itself requires — subject to the concession described below.
- Two years of paid work experience in the sector of the contract.
- Pay at the prevailing wage: the higher of the regional median for the occupation on Canada's Job Bank, or the range the employer already pays comparable staff.
The qualifications concession
This is the part worth reading twice. Canadian educational requirements are deemed to be met when a UK professional has met United Kingdom educational requirements and the Canadian client or employer supplies a letter confirming that those qualifications are satisfactory. In practice that removes the credential-assessment step that slows most other routes into Canada. Australia has long had the same concession; the UK now has it too, and IRCC conditions it on the UK continuing to treat Canadians comparably under its own commitments.
The 61 occupations open to UK citizens
Your job offer has to match one of these. The titles are Canada's own occupational classifications, so they are reproduced here exactly as IRCC lists them rather than paraphrased — a near-miss on the title is a refusal.

What this route does not give you
There is no technicians category for the United Kingdom. Brunei, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Malaysia and Australia have technicians listed at TEER 2 and 3; the UK entry covers professionals at TEER 0 and 1 only. A British electrician or technologist has no CPTPP route on these provisions, whatever a comparable Australian may have.
Nor does a UK principal applicant's spouse get an open work permit. IRCC grants that to spouses of citizens of Australia, Chile, Japan and Mexico, and to permanent residents of Australia. The United Kingdom is absent from that list, so a spouse who wants to work in Canada needs their own basis to do so. For a family deciding whether to move, this is usually the detail that decides it.
One confusing detail on the official page
IRCC's summary paragraph still names only Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Mexico, Peru and Malaysia, because that intro has not been updated since the UK section was added. Read only the opening and you would conclude that British citizens are not covered. They are — the United Kingdom appears further down, under the country-specific occupations. If an airline, employer or adviser tells you otherwise from that first paragraph, scroll on.
Do British citizens need a UK ETA?
No — and since that is what the rest of this site is about, it is worth saying here. A British citizen cannot apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation and does not need one to enter the United Kingdom. The two subjects share nothing but a passport.
